Alas.. The whole cultural event thing went well at least. Ms Sum and Ms Tian were quite satisfied that the whole thing went smoothly, despite that there were quite some while when things went abit messy and disorientated.. Having the japs to wait at the corridor.. etc etc. And i got some compliments over the backdrop from Vinu who scolded me for taking the backdrop down before he even get to take a pic of it!
So anyways, I praise the whole committee for doing a great job organizing this event! Even having so many problems, they still managed to pull it off and the event run as smoothly as it could. Pity though, only the facilitators were the one who get all the merit as they are the ones who get to mingle around with the japs.. and even received presents from their respective group of jap students during the gift exchange. The main OC get none of the gifts =/
Lucky me for being one of the facilitators for that event as well! Honestly, most of them look no different from malaysian chinese. Throw in a couple of fair malaysians and you can't really tell whether they are japanese or malaysians. My group was a group of some really cute and pretty japanese students.. Gosh, they are so kawaii, i feel like bringing them back home (gosh i treat them like cats or hamsters or some sort of pet ><)! We were quite silent and awkward at first, their english was pretty-damned horrible.. and my japanese was really-damned horrible as well >< At any point of time, i was merely nodding away to some japanese words which i dont even understand. Even so, all of us got along well at the end, because they are just such friendly people!
You know how to bridge the gap closer?
Simple. Ask them to stand together take photographs. And they always pose with their universal "peace" hand sign.
Somehow, japanese get veryyyyyyy excited when they get to take pictures. You don't even have to know the language to tell them to get together and take pictures. Just flash your camera and they know what it means! Megumi was like telling me.. or asking me.. that Malaysians don't really take pictures. Or at least that's what i guessed she said anyway. lol. I guess it's not normal when they don't really see malaysians taking out their cameras and snapping away lol.
I guess the height of the day was during the interaction and gift exchange session. They actually made us - the facis and the assistant facis, hand-written cards which contain their details such as their name, interests etc. Even made us a picture book with information about their country, their culture and others, bought us presents.. ... Gosh. And to think what UTAR has given them back in exchange.. jeng jeng jeng..
UTAR goodie bags!!
Basically it has everything that one can find when he/she enrolls in UTAR. UTAR t-shirt, UTAR notebook, UTAR pen.. and other than that, some chinese biscuits.
I's so embarassing when the jap girls were so excited and made us open up the presents they gave us - japanese kite, chopsticks, origami papers and stuff like that. And in turn.. Megumi pulled out a UTAR t-shirt from the goodie bag. And guess what, I was wearing that same bloody UTAR t-shirt - No My Choice.
Doh... I pretended to be absorbed and impressed with the picture book they gave me. My assistant Alex was suggesting that we gave them a one MYR note but we didn't anyway. So impromptu =/.. So unfriendly of us =/
Finally, it was time to say goodbye, it was all but too short an encounter with the japs, but we felt like we were starting to share some sort of bond with each other..
Hopefully they did enjoy getting to know us, just like how we feel about knowing them.
